What was the name of your video store?

cassells video

Where was the store located?

mansfield, Other (United Kingdom)

When did you start shopping at this store?

1985

Describe your video store - what did it look like? What were its distinguishing
features?

it was a time when video was still in its infancy and i always remember the shop having all the newest titles available to rent. they where all categorized in to the all different genres. i did like the set up this way as it was very easy to find what you where looking for. it was quite small for a video store but did seem bigger to me as i was only about 10/11 yrs old .

What were the employees and/or owners like, and what kinds of interactions
did you have with them? What particularly memorable exchanges or events
do you remember?

it was a family run business so you where always made very welcome.

What other services/products did the store offer besides the rental or sale
of videos? Did this change over time?

there where beverages made available i.e coffee/ tea and there was a food dispencer. sadly however it is no longer a video store. since the likes of blockbuster moved in to my area they had to close the video store and turned it into a tools for hire shop.

What video formats did the store offer (i.e. VHS, Beta, Laserdisc)? Where were
different formats kept in the store?

vhs and beta max

In addition to mainstream Hollywood movies, what other kinds of videotapes
(for example children's, exercise, or X-rated) did the store rent/sell? Where were these
videos found in the store, and how often did you rent or purchase them?

they did all of the genres available at the time. the childrens section had the least amounts of videos. x rated where available but they where in the back of the shop with the really hardcore horror films.

Did you tend to rent or buy videos? Why?

i initially rented the videos (actually my mum and dad did as i was too young) however as i have grown older i have developed an immense interest in films which is probably due to those visits to the video shop as a kid.

During the period that you shopped at this store, what changes did you see?

Is this store still open? If not, when did it close?

In your own words, tell the story of your first VCR/video player. Where
and when did you buy it, and why did you decide to make the purchase?

Did you ever rent a VCR or other hardware (a camera, for instance)? If so,
how often and why?
